Naturally Social: Grow Your Hair, Grow Your Audience & Grow Your Brand Sunday, March 10th 3:30-4:30pm (this panel requires a SXSW Interactive, Gold or Platinum badge for entry)
I’m so very excited to be presenting MY FIRST panel at SXSW this year as part of the Blacks in Tech (BIT) weekend! Naturally Social will examine how various social media platforms have played a role in the natural hair explosion and how brands and bloggers are harnessing said platforms. Hear from natural hair superstars including Carol’s Daughter, Curl Box founder Myliek Teele and Afrobella, and learn how you can incorporate their social media strategies and avoid their missteps to help grow your online audience and brand.
Finally, I’m in the process of planning an Austin meet up next weekend, which will not require a SXSW badge. So if you’re interested in coming, Click here to join my mailing list and select “SXSW 2013 meetup” so I can reach you with more info. Thanks so much and hope to see you guys next weekend!

Awesomeness with @afrobella @chescaleigh and more at #SXSW

NYFW A/W 2013 Backstage Beauty: CarmenMarcValvo and NARS

Models Hye (in a black striped lace blouse and sparkle tweed gathered skirt paired with a patent leather Mary Jane) and Chen (in a black leather and shaved mink quilted coat over a caviar beaded skirt and black suede ankle boots) - two of my favorite looks from Carmen Marc Valvo’s Fall/Winter 2013 show.

For My Ideal Bookshelf, writer Thessaly La Force and illustrator Jane Mount have tapped people like Patti Smith, Lemony Snicket, Jonathan Lethem and Christoph Neimann, and had them narrow down the books that shaped them to a single shelf. It’s a neat peak inside some interesting minds. And of course leads you to wonder what shape your own shelf might take. Me, I’m thinking Slouching Towards Bethlehem, The Boys of My Youth, Without Feathers, Miss Rumphius, Pride and Prejudice, Blood Horses, The Collected Poems of Adam Zagajewski. What about you? What would your ideal bookshelf look like?

I was scrolling through my Tumblr feed a year or so ago, when I saw a photo of Joyce Bryant. The caption said she was once dubbed the “black Marilyn Monroe” and was mentioned many times in Walter Winchell’s gossip column.
But, I had never heard of or seen Bryant before. It’s reactions like mine that led 42-year-old writer Nichelle Gainer to start a book project showcasing a collection of rarely seen historical photos of actors, educators, writers, students, musicians and more — all African-American.
“I write fiction for the most part, and when I am in libraries doing research … I’ve come across a lot of different interesting articles and photos that you never see anywhere else,” says Gainer, who has written for Woman’s Day, GQ, InStyle, Essence and Honey magazines. ”They’re just locked in these ivory towers, whether it’s an academic institution or a library.”
Gainer, who is still working on her book, decided to share her photo finds and now curates the Vintage Black Glamour Tumblr blog, Facebook page and Pinterest account. Much of what she posts are photos you likely haven’t seen before of stars you may know.
